The targeting of translators and interpreters is not a new phenomenon. In ancient times, some considered us a life form slightly below humans. In the Middle Ages, we were often viewed as shady figures. And today, despite the critical nature of our work, we are persecuted and prosecuted as traitors by state and non-state actors alike. Manifestations of this historic continuum of distrust – what I call the Translator-Traitor Mentality – range from mere suspicion to unjust imprisonment to severe human rights abuses. I saw this firsthand when serving as a forensic linguist on a terrorism trial in which an interpreter was wrongfully convicted of aiding and abetting terrorist activity. Realizing just how vulnerable we are when working in high-risk settings, I knew that a paradigm shift was needed in how we are perceived and treated. But such a shift calls for major awareness-raising and the implementation of linguist-friendly policies and enhanced legal mechanisms. To help bring this about, I established Red T, a non-profit exclusively dedicated to the protection of translators and interpreters worldwide.
As you explore the website and learn about our advocacy, you will get a sense of the urgency of Red T’s mission and how your safety is inextricably linked to our safety. I hope this will inspire you to spread the word: Protect Translators. Protect Interpreters. Protect the World.
